Why We Love It

In the late 1960's and early 1970's, Seiko was experimenting with some of the first automatic chronograph movements ever made.

Unlike the Swiss, who were creating their own automatic chronographs in the form of the Heuer-designed Chronomatic and the Zenith El Primero, Seiko - being used to producing in scale - were able to keep their costs for their chronographs more accessible through mass production. Featuring a wide variety of case and dial designs, the 1970s were very much the golden age of Seiko sports watches. 

This Reference 7015-6010 Time Sonar embodies all of the style and charm of this era of Japanese watchmaking. With its defining translucent dial revealing the inner workings of its a quick set calendar mechanism, the Time Sonar stands out in a field of impressive and colorful vintage chronograph offerings. Furthermore, the Time Sonar features a 'smoked' display back revealing the automatic-winding mechanism beating away internally - one of the first mass production wristwatches to offer such a feature!

While its Swiss contemporaries  are continually reaching higher and higher prices, vintage Seiko models such as this provide an opportunity for collectors to snatch up pieces with unparalleled watchmaking heritage and a character unlike anything else - all at an extremely accessible price point.

The Story

Whether we're wearing it while hoofing it up a mountain, trudging through the wetlands in search of winged dinner, fishing for brownies or bonefish, or just getting it sandy at the beach, this piece serves a very important role as a timepiece that can take a beating while also giving us watch snobs something to wear that we can be truly proud of.
